VOLUME 2 - ISSUE 4 - AN APPEAL FOR HELP

We have received the following from Professor Ulrich Trendelenburg, the distinguished pharmacologist, now 81, who was in Oxford between 1952 and 1956, and later served on the IUPHAR Executive Committee, as councillor, from 1981 to 1984, and as second Vice-President, from 1984 to 1987. Any help would be much appreciated, and should be sent to him direct.

Appeal for help: I am trying to put together a roster of all German-speaking pharmacologists persecuted during the Nazi-years. I plan to compile the curricula vitae of such pharmacologists who arrived in England as refugees from Nazi-Germany (and Austria and Prague). I should be most grateful for whatever help I can get.

The c.v.’s of the following scientists are virtually complete: Hugh Blaschko, Gustav Born, Edith Bülbring, Philipp Ellinger, Wilhelm Feldberg, Hans Heller, Regina Kapeller-Adler, Hans Kosterlitz, Heinz.Otto Schild, Hans Schlossmann, Marthe Vogt. No further help is needed with these, but can anyone help with dates, positions, locations or obituaries of the following three scientists:

Freund, Ernst (1863 – 1946 London) (was he a pharmacologist?)

Pollack, Leo (1878 – 1946 Newmarket, Suffolk)

Schlesinger, Max (later Slazenger; dates of birth/death unknown) emigrated to Rangoon and Bangalore, returned to Switzerland and /or Germany some time after the war.

Do you know of any further ‘refugee pharmacologists’ (as defined above) in the UK?

Any help provided by readers of pA2 will be greatly appreciated. If you have any information, please contact:
